I am a mom to a 10 year old with a brain injury commonly referred to as autism. I also am the aunt to a child with Down's syndrome. My brother and I found an organization in Philadelphia called The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential www.iahp.org. They teach parents how to teach their brain injured children and the kids make amazing progress. When we first took Zack there, he was neurologically 18 months old in a 6 year old body. Now at 10, he can speed read college level books, do instant math, and can read two languages. They help children with all sorts of diagnoses: autism, LD, ADD, ADHD, cerebral palsy, Down's Syndrome, epilepsy, even kids in a coma - and many of them recover! Oh, and my nephew with Down's, he started on the program at 2 months old and has NO mental retardation.
