I am a Catholic convert of 3.5 years. I have 5 daughters, one out of High School, one a home schooled 11th grader, an 8th grader at parochial school, a 4 year old, and a 17 month old. I consider myself a Catholic Christian and am a bit irritated that I am classified in a separate category from Christians, but......I may be overly sensitive. Anybody else out there?
Your point is very well taken. No offense was intended. And I don't think you were being overly sensitive.
Because of your observation, I have changed the category descriptions to Christian (Catholic) + Christian (Protestant).
When I setup these categories, I was not making a statement about Catholic or Christian faiths. The religious home-school "marketplace" seemed to have established differences. There are many groups who identify themselves as Christian home-schoolers, and there are other groups (lesser in number) who identify themselves as Catholic home-schoolers. It just seemed like the marketplace said there was this difference, so that's what I went with in coming up with labels. However, I think I like these labels better. So "thank you!"
As Alan Greenspan recently reminded us in his testimony before Congress, sometimes the market makes mistakes.
Thanks for the comments and (to the administrator) for the adjustments.
On another subject, where do you find community support for Catholic homeschooling? My daughters are not even school-aged yet, but I'm trying to create a community to support this likely option. We're slowly finding (non-Catholic) homeschoolers/new friends in our general neighborhood, but I'd also like to make sure that we have a strong Catholic community to reinforce important values. Our parish has no homeschoolers, it is uncommon in our county, and the few Catholic e-lists I was on ended up being fairly useless. Ideas? Thanks....
Hi, I am a Catholic and would love to talk to other Catholics. We started homeschooling in November 2007 and, madtortuga, we use the Mater Amabilis curriculum (www.materamabilis.org/ma) which have its yahoo group (they call it "Mater Amabilis Forum"). Hope you fing it helpful.
We love Catholic Homeschooling! One of my books: "Catholic Home Schooling" by Mary Kay Clark is a great guide in all subjects. This catalog is connected with it: "Seton Educational Media - Home School Catalog." www.setonbooks.com There are several Catholic Homeschooling Conferences on the East Coast, which are listed in their catalog. With Lent approaching next week, this is a special time to teach the Lent lessons.
May peace always be in your home school days, Barbara
Hi! We are Catholics from Central VA! I will start homeschooling in the fall. I have one learning disabled daughter that is 12. I have another daughter that is 8. She will be receiving First Eucharist in April! I am glad to find some Catholics as well as other homeschoolers. I have not found any Catholic groups around. I have spoken with Seton a lot and will probably be going that route. They have a wonderful special needs department. I will be attending the Catholic Homeschooking Conference in Northern VA in June.
Hi my Name is Lisa and this is my 2nd year of homeschooling and like last year I have days where I think I should send her back to public school because I feel like I am not do her any good.Bridget does well with language arts, her writing is improving but she has trouble with math.Simple addition can be hard for her.I have tried different methods for helping her.I keep hoping that it will all click one day and she will take off.We live in Va Beach and she has to be tested every year before August 1st.I am amazed at the math that 2nd graders are doing. There are things I didnt do until I was in 4th grade and I worry that if she doesnt do well they will force me to put her back in public school. Its very frustrating for me sometimes.Anyway I hope to meet more people from my area as well as other areas and welcome any ideas or suggestions and support is always welcomed Thank You
